Darkness, delusion, ignorance.
Tamas is one of the three gunas. Tamas consists of the musty inactive forces in nature, that manifest themselves as unawareness, sloth, impotence, un-clarity and darkness. Tamas makes up the matter bound aspect of the three gunas; a by Tamas defined consciousness is unable to adequately understand reality. Such a consciousness has the tendency to misunderstand things and take that which is untrue as truth. It leads people to negligence and wandering. On the material plain the Tamas is an essential principle of creation, allowing material stability.

Duisternis, verblinding, onwetendheid.
Tamas is een van de drie gunas. Tamas omvat de bedompte, inactieve krachten in de natuur, die zich als onbewustzijn, traagheid, impotentie, niet-helderheid en duisternis manifesteren. Tamas vormt het materiegebonden aspect van de drie gunas, en een door tamas bepaald bewustzijn kan de werkelijkheid niet adequaat bevatten. Deze heeft de neiging, de dingen verkeerd te begrijpen, en het valse als waar aan te nemen. Zo een bewustzijn voert de mensen naar nalatigheid en dwaling. Op het materiële vlak is tamas een onontbeerlijk scheppingsprincipe, dat de materie stabiliteit verleent.
